Description
Mifeprex (generic name: mifepristone) is a prescription medication approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) for medical termination of an early intrauterine pregnancy.
Key Description
– Primary Use: Mifeprex is used in a two-step regimen with another medication called misoprostol (often Cytotec) to end a pregnancy that is up to 70 days (10 weeks) since the first day of the last menstrual period. It is not approved for pregnancies beyond this stage.
– How it Works: Mifepristone is an antiprogestational steroid. It blocks the action of progesterone, a hormone essential for maintaining pregnancy. By blocking progesterone, Mifeprex causes the uterine lining to break down, stops the pregnancy from progressing, and prepares the uterus for expulsion of the pregnancy tissue when misoprostol is taken (which causes cramping and bleeding).
– Dosage Regimen (standard FDA-approved protocol):
– Day 1: Take 200 mg (1 tablet) of Mifeprex orally.
– 24–48 hours later: Take misoprostol (usually 800 mcg buccally or as directed).
– Follow-up: Typically 7–14 days later to confirm the pregnancy has ended (via ultrasound or exam).
– Effectiveness: When used correctly in early pregnancy (up to 70 days), the regimen is highly effective (around 95–98% success rate), with a small percentage of cases requiring additional intervention.
– Other Use: Mifepristone is also approved (under the brand Korlym) for managing hyperglycemia in patients with Cushing’s syndrome who have type 2 diabetes and cannot have surgery (higher doses, different indication).
Important Safety Notes
– It is only available under a restricted program (e.g., Mifepristone REMS in the U.S.) due to risks.
– Serious risks include heavy bleeding, infection (rare but can be fatal), incomplete abortion, or ongoing pregnancy requiring surgical follow-up.
– It is not the “morning-after” pill (emergency contraception) and does not prevent pregnancy if taken after unprotected sex.
– Always used under medical supervision—never self-medicate.
